Santa Clara, Calif., March 31, 2015 – Palo Alto Networks® (NYSE: PANW), the leader in enterprise security, today announced enhancements that further strengthen the cyber threat prevention capabilities of the Palo Alto Networks Traps Advanced Endpoint Protection offering.

Unlike other endpoint security solutions, Traps takes a unique prevention-oriented approach to addressing advanced attacks on endpoints by identifying and blocking the techniques used by attackers as they attempt to exploit a vulnerability, or deliver malware directly to an endpoint.  This approach enables Traps to stop even unknown malware and zero-day exploits from compromising an endpoint, and eliminates the need to rely solely on signatures and security patches for protection.

QUOTE

  • “Cyberattackers are constantly developing new ways to compromise endpoints in an effort to gain unauthorized access to enterprise networks. The latest upgrades to our Traps Advanced Endpoint Protection solution continues to make it harder and harder for attackers to be successful.”

- Lee Klarich, senior vice president of Product Management, Palo Alto Networks

The latest release of Traps, version 3.2, is now available to customers on the Palo Alto Networks Support Portal and includes the following updates:

  • New exploit prevention modules – Traps 3.2 includes three new exploit prevention modules, plus enhancements to existing modules that allow Traps to stay steps ahead of attackers. Traps’ focus on blocking the techniques attackers use to exploit a vulnerability, versus trying to protect against the vulnerability itself, has proven to be the most effect tool at preventing zero-day exploits. With this release, Traps extends its protections against advanced evasion techniques, including prevention for an important and emerging technique utilizing the return path from the Kernel.
  • Enhanced Prevention of Unknown Malware Prevention—Building upon the initial WildFire integration capabilities, Traps now allows an automatic upload of executable files to the Palo Alto Networks WildFire cloud for further analysis of potentially new, unknown threats.  In addition, the Traps Advanced Execution Control now provides more granular protection at the local level for organizations requiring greater control over which executables can run on their networks. More granular execution restrictions allow organizations to reduce the attack surface by specifying execution rules based on folder locations, device restrictions, child processes, and unsigned executables.  And finally, through the addition of a new malware prevention module, Traps can protect against malware techniques often referred to as “process hollowing” or “process replacement” where the attacker creates processes in a suspended state, in order to inject and run their malicious code before the application process starts.
  • Enhanced Scalability — Significant focus on scalability has resulted in each Endpoint Security Manager (ESM) now supporting up to 50,000 endpoints per server, plus connectivity enhancements which allow the endpoints to find the best ESM to reach. Additionally, 30+ new features focus on workflow improvements, automation, reporting, and more.
